German Punctuality
The definition of punctuality is defined in the true sense by Germans. We in India may believe that we know what punctuality is. I’m not being sarcastic, I swear. There is a reason why I say that. The entire learning about German punctuality was an overwhelming experience. But I am glad I understood that and appreciate their respect for their time and others!
I always wanted to explore Munich on my own. Walking through its cobbled alleys, enjoying the city tour, or simply listening to music or reading a book. So, I picked up the map, timetables, and my German skills to ask for directions. I was surprised to read the tram timetable, which mentioned tram arrival timings like 10:22. I took it for granted this would be equivalent to 10:25 or 10:30! And I realised how wrong I was when I saw the tram pass by when I was at the traffic light waiting to cross the street. And a quick look at my watch made my heart sink! It was indeed 10:22. I had never known this level of punctuality. And could then understand why Germans would be upset with a delay of 2 minutes.
The entire road-to-rail journey through the city had a new sense of timing. This is not restricted to just public transport but in their daily lives, work everywhere. I would easily term punctuality as an important part of their culture.
Indeed, it did stress me out initially; more than missing a bus or train, it was their reaction when you’re late freaked me out. But it helped me manage my timings better, and later everything was sorted out.
Stay tuned for time!
