My connection with Spain is very much recent.
Bringing back the memories of my trip to Madrid in 2018, who would not mention Madrid’s famous ‘Rastro’ (flea market)? I highly recommend a walk of it. It can be best defined as an open street market. It’s set up every Sunday between 9 to 14 hours. It gave me similar vibes to any of those street markets in Mumbai, Elco, Fashion Street, etc.
It’s a perfect place to start a conversation and also get a good deal. You can get cool and trendy stuff (well, cool for me) like clothing, souvenirs, antique items, and many more. It was all the more fascinating for me because I could flaunt my newfound Spanish-speaking skills with the vendors. They were easygoing, friendly and from various parts of the Hispanic world which made it much easier.
This way of practising a language is so much fun. You not only enjoy the mood and atmosphere of the place but also end up buying pretty decent stuff and above all get the satisfaction of improving your Spanish skills.
And, as a last-minute treat at the end of the shopping trip, one can enjoy a nice bite at ‘Tapas’ (Spanish snack bars) with a chilled drink.
Give it a try. If you want to get hang of some colloquial language, get down on the streets of Sunday markets, enjoy the rhythm and get in the flow of language.
People everywhere are just like us. They only speak differently. We need to break that language barrier and speak our authentic selves. Things are much simpler then. I mean, I’m not telling you to straight out start dancing in the streets but do try and get involved in the culture and lifestyle.
It’s much like taking the first step, once you master that (yes, it is an art), this will be a piece of cake.
With this, I step away from our conversation.
Te veo pronto,
