German Autobahn (Highway)

I don’t think the word Autobahn is new to most of us. What makes it almost known everywhere? Besides the fact that German highways are close to the best condition and are a sight for sore eyes, they offer no speed limit! You can imagine driving the best car with no speed police observing you.

Which, is an astonishing experience. Word of caution: You need to have a good experience driving on German highways and an alert mind. Remember you are not the only one speeding on the highway!

I have always liked the drive on Landstraße (country road). I would define it as a picture-perfect drive. Crossing towns surrounded by majestic mountains, crystal clear rivers flowing across, and lush green meadows: grazing lands of cows; to villages adorned with cosy homes neatly decorated with flowers. In a word, I would describe it as simply a breathtaking view.

Language learning always took place during driving breaks. Whether for a coffee break, to click photos, or to enjoy a local meal in the restaurant, the opportunity to interact with locals was never lost. What made it so special was how these interactions helped me understand the local dialect, which was just like learning a new language. Of course, it also helped me understand the rural German traditions and way of living. Another step which brought me closer to the German language.

So, you see, highways aren’t just for crossing across cities and states, they can also aid cross-cultural insights. They connect places. If you can connect yourself with a language, it can take you places.
